Consideration for Graduates

With graduation happening all around us at local colleges and high schools you might be questioning what to give that graduate as his graduation present.  Here are some things to consider:

If you graduate is continuing onto college either as a freshman or a graduate school – consider one of the new hand held readers – the Kindle. the Nook, the Reader or any other similar device.  Then share with your graduate the fact that he can download many required textbooks right into the handheld.  E-books tend to cost less than their hard cover counterparts.  It is easier to carry a handheld than to carry around those heavy textbooks.  It is easier to carry than  to carry a laptop around.

And speaking of laptops – if your student is off to live on or off campus with a laptop computer, consider purchasing a laptop lock.  This allows the laptop to be chained to a surface and cannot be taken without being able to unlock it.  Many students will describe the theft of computers that goes on at most campuses.

Many college students will also tell you the horror stories of losing a term paper the night before it was due.  Consider purchasing an automatic backup system that will save without the student having to do anything.  This will ensure that he does not forget to do a backup and that data will not lost in the case of a crash.

Practical items such as extra long sheets, a comforter, new towels, a shower caddy or shower shoes and a collapsible laundry bag are all welcome necessities for a student headed into the dorms.  Duffel bags for carrying clothing are more useful than luggage since it can be hard to find a place  to store hard or soft side luggage.

For the graduate who is now out of school – consider a gift for helping them find work.  A gift certificate to a store that will have needed office attire can be extremely useful.  Maybe a contribution into a Roth IRA to get that new graduate headed on the right direction to a long term savings plan.

If you have a graduate about to set up their first apartment, consider dishes, a microwave, a small piece of furniture or anything that would help furnish an appartment.  Maybe even helping with that security deposit or first month’s rent.  Consider stocking cupboards or refrigerator with food staples, spices and herbs.

The key is to find something to help make the transition from high school to college or from college to graduate school or school to the first apartment easier.
